A Message from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

On behalf of the Government of Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is responsible for federal co-operative housing programs and policies.

Under an agreement signed with CMHC in 2005, the Agency for Co-operative Housing is providing certain services to housing co-operatives funded under federal programs in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Prince Edward Island. The Agency helps safeguard the public investment in co-operative housing and contributes to the long-term viability of the portfolio it manages for CMHC.

As part of the service agreement with CMHC, the Agency provides information to co-operatives, assesses risks and takes action to mitigate them, and monitors and seeks compliance with operating agreements.  CMHC continues to be responsible for federal co-operative housing programs and policies on behalf of the federal government in addition to providing federal assistance.

As Canada’s national housing agency for more than 60 years, CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, affordable homes, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.
